Three years of Rhythmanalysis in Johannesburg

A presentation by Mocke J van Veuren of research conducted over the last three years, including films produced in collaboration with Theresa Collins, as well as musical collaborations with Bradley Maponya, Siya Makuzeni and João Orecchia.

The research focuses on Henri Lefebvre’s concept of Rhythmanalysis, an interdisciplinary science of rhythms outlined just before Lefebvre’s death in 1991. Through the time-lapse studies of the Minutes Project produced with Theresa Collins, the development of methods of graphing that trace patterns of movement in the city, and musical interpretations of quantitative data, the project asks how we can simultaneously measure and dream the city of Johannesburg.
